This week we touched upon several topics. We discussed students' rights vs. adults' rights; corporal punishment; Supreme Court cases that have set precedent; hot topics such as same sex partners going to prom, racial profiling, and International intelligence; and lastly the contrast between the rights of Americans and the literal NO rights of North Koreans. I ask that you think back about what you learned about these topics and answer the following questions. They are all opinion based, so please feel free to speak freely.
1. Were you aware that corporal punishement still exists in the United States?
2. Given an example, le'ts say a 7 year old punches another kid, do you think spanking that child as a punishment in school would be appropriate? Explain your answer (Does the punishment fit the crime)?
3. The U.S. Supreme Court has set precedent that allows schools to limit the rights of students in school. I know it may be hard to take a step back and analyze, but can you understand WHY the Supreme Court has reduced the rights of studenst? Explain your answer.
4. My objective in showing you the North Korean documentary was to allow you to see perspective. Yes, we have rules and laws that limit us from doing things (like drinking alcohol before we're 21), but if we compare our democracy to the communist society of North Korea, we are made aware of all of the rights we take for granted. Make a list of rights we take for granted in the United States that North Korea isn't able to experience.
5. Do you agree or disagree with the death penalty? Explain your answer of WHY you agree or disagree. -Monday we'll explore the facts and statistics of the death penalty, you may be surprised with some of the facts...
Happy Friday! Enjoy your weekend
